How To Choose The Right Dog Groomer in Birkenhead

How To Choose The Right Dog Groomer in Birkenhead

Over the years this is the one question owners ask again and again, especially since we have seen an increase in both the number of households with dogs and also the number of dog groomers. What we also see is varying degrees of knowledge of what dog groomers actually can do. So how do you choose a groomer that’s right for you and your doggy?

Word of Mouth

You will be amazed how many people you talk to when you get a dog and nothing can help more than the experience of others. Ask other dog owners who they use, are they happy with the service. If you see someone's dog, and you like the there groom, don't be afraid to ask them. Most Dog people are only too happy to stop and have a chat. Be aware though you may see a dog that has been shaved and where it may be the owner isn’t happy. What they may not tell you is, the groomers had to do so because they had neglected their dogs coat. In the case where it is a company with more than one salon, or a franchise, check which one it was. Quality can vary from one salon to another.

So What Qualifications Does a Dog Groomer Need?

You might be interested to know that you currently, legally do not need any qualifications to open a dog grooming salon. Even so there are a number of qualifications in the field, some of these however can be done without practical experience. This doesn’t apply to those recognised by the industry. The four generally recognised Industry qualifications are City and Guilds ICMG IPET and OCN. Of these City and Guilds, IPET and OCN are Ofqual regulated.

How do I know A Dog Groomer will be right for me and my dog?

Ring the groomers, ask them about any concerns. You may have to wait for a call back, as some groomers will not take calls whilst with a dog.  In the case of mobile groomers they may be driving. Some groomers will allow you to visit and see the premises, and  to be present whilst the dog is groomed. This will depend on insurance and safety considerations. Although it is pleasant to watch your dog being groomed, there are cases where a dog will be more stressed with their owner there.

Dog Grooming Salon

If you are dropping your dog off at a salon, consider whether your dog is happy in the company of other dogs. Are they happy in a different environment if waiting for collection. A lot of dogs appear settled with this. Some Salons will have different accommodation areas, where a dog can wander round safely after grooming.
